Just a small mod of a patchrack.
A couple of months ago I decided to house all routers and such in one combined place, just to have more space on my desk
. Found a cheap 19” patchrack on the internet. After getting it home and almost breaking the rear car window, I decided to put some wheels under it just to make it more movable.
Materials used
- 4x wheels
- Some nuts and bolts

Putting the wheels was a peace of cake. Keep in mind though not to place the wheels too close to the edges, otherwise they’ll stick out when turning. The dimensions of the rack are 55x65x75 (LxWxH cm). It has a front and back door with a mounting plate to connect the rack to a wall.
Currently, the rack houses 4 Cisco 2500 series routers (2501, 2502, 2503 and 2504), a Dell Powerconnect 2224 switch, a HP 3300/24 switch and a homebrew server which will be listed later on. To reduce the noise I disabled all internal fans of the Cisco routers. The Cisco routers are able to operate at 40 C. Although the rack is packed with hardware; the temperature didnt raise above 30 C with all components operational (testrun of aprox. 2 hours).
All components are powered by one powerhub, there is only 1 powercabel going out of the rack.
