Mr. Boombastiq

He puts the boom back in ka-BOOM!

Inspired by the movie Ghost Dog (1999), Mr. Boombastiq was one of the first projects realised by mrpain and me. He was brought to life to enjoy us with cheerful music when playing basketball, doing choirs in the garden or during other outdoor activities. No matter what the occasion Mr. Boombastiq always turned out to be a party on the go.

Materials used
- 12mm MDF board
- 4mm triplex board
- 2 10cm 40W RMS Pioneer speakers
- 2 17cm 60W RMS Pioneer speakers
- Sony Xplod CDX-4000 CD receiver
- Caliber Rally CA-2260 260W amplifier
- 1F Capacitor with voltage indicator
- 5 12cm fans + fan guards
- Amplimo 2×12V 200VA transformer (secondary winding modified)
- Amplimo 2×12V 100VA transformer
- Gel battery 12V 7,2A plus charge/protection circuit (homemade)
- Some electronic components such as capacitors, diode bridges, switches etc

Building
The case is build from 12mm MDF (medium density fibre board). It’s easy to work with and pretty cheap. The only downside of this material is that you need to treat it with primer before painting it. In order to give the outside a nicer finish, I used triplex as seen on the photos. There was no design on paper which could be followed. Everything was thought up and build on the spot.

The heart of Mr. Boombastiq consists of two separate power supplies. One 12V 10A to power the Sony Xplod  CDX-4000 CD receiver plus amplifier and one 12V 5A to power all the other electronics such as fans, VU-meters and case lights. Both power supplies are homemade. For portable operation Mr. Boombastiq is powered by a 12V 7,2A gel battery. When the mains power connector is plugged in the battery will automatically be charged. If there is no mains power available it will use the battery to power all the electronics. Five 12cm fans maintain a constant airflow within the case to ensure reliable operation. Even in direct sunlight and with ambient temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius Mr. Boombastiq is able to keep his head cool. For extending field operation the fan speed of all fans are adjustable and case lights are made switchable.
